Demand among South African public transport operators and private people-carrier fleets is evolving as operators seek vehicles that are fuel efficient, reliable and cost-effective to maintain.

Operators want solutions that deliver low cost of ownership, while offering improved comfort and safety for commuters, IVECO South Africa sales head Roberto Nobili tells Engineering News in an exclusive interview.

“Rising fuel and maintenance costs have made trusted and reputable brands even more attractive to fleet operators who value dependable service and readily available parts.”

Nobili adds that the continued rise of e-commerce is also shaping the market for panel vans as businesses expand their last-mile delivery fleets.

“After Covid-19, the bus market took a dip. With economic strains and lockdown restrictions, many customers held on to their old buses. However, in recent months, there has been a resurgence in demand for new products.”

IVECO is responding to this renewed demand with a new 65-seater commuter bus, released in 2025.

The model follows the legacy of the much-revered Afriway bus series and was developed in response to requests from customers who want to continue using IVECO products in their fleets.

“Built on the robust Eurocargo truck chassis, renowned for its more than 30-year track record in the global truck market and recipient of multiple International Truck of the Year awards, the new bus promises strong performance and durability. It is being locally built, in partnership with Busmark, a well-established South African manufacturer known for its reliability and aftermarket support.”

Nobili adds that IVECO continues to offer versatility in its passenger transport solutions through its Daily range, which includes 22+1- and 25+1-seater configurations.

The company also supports fleet affordability through competitive financial options: “We currently have a campaign offering the IVECO Sisonke Taxi 23-seater at a reasonable monthly instalment,” he notes.

The company’s adaptability is also extending beyond traditional passenger fleets. Earlier this year, IVECO provided a custom panel van with a wheelchair ramp for a mobility-challenged customer, enabling him to travel comfortably with his family and pets.

“As IVECO, we take pride in growing alongside our customers. Every new model and partnership reflects our commitment to mobility needs which are reliable, inclusive and built for the road ahead,” he concludes.
